I hope you are all well and enjoying this lovely autumn we are having!
I do apologise that it has been so long since we have updated the blog, but I think I have managed to keep up to date with you all via email. I just want to use this email to recap some of the exciting milestones that have occurred over the last few months
Doctors – With effect from 1st October, HIOWAA and TVACAA (Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance) will have a regular doctor-led crew and deliver enhanced medical care in their helicopter emergency missions. A Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine (PHEM) experienced doctor will be available for the critical Air Ambulance flights, which will lead to improved patient outcomes, benefiting the communities that we serve.  To put it in Layman’s terms, a Doctor will be on board a helicopter in the SCAS region (either HIOWAA or TVACAA) on all of the shifts.Â
A doctor-led Air Ambulance service will bring specialist medical skills at the highest level, to the patient. Â Doctors bring a different set of skills to the pre-hospital care and the team can provide:
• Emergency Anaesthesia
• Sedation and pain relief for painful procedures such as straightening broken limbs
• Non-invasive and invasive respiratory support
• Cardiovascular support
• Advanced Intensive care monitoring
• Treatment of a wider range of medical conditions including sepisÂ
Doctors can also provide on scene support with regards to making the decision about the pathway into the NHS (not necessarily through Emergency Departments)
Night Flying - At the same time as the above changes, in support of the new NHS concept for major trauma centres, HIOWAA and TVACAA will also be taking the first steps towards night operating, with a capability for urgent transfers between key hospitals. This started with HIOWAA flying 12 hour shifts all year around and carrying out emergency hospital transfers. The HEMS desk will be operational throughout the extended hours.
We currently are able to operate night flights where there is fit for purpose landing sites with adequate lighting (e.g. helipads) However we are currently not able to provide night HEMS. This would be something we work towards as night HEMS require costly outlay and complex operating procedures to ensure safe air ambulance services.
Change in our statistics –Â
• Cost of keeping the helicopter in the air is £125,000 per month, or over £4,000 per day.
• We are flying on average 2 to 3 missions per day.
• We now have over 47,000 signed up members of our lottery.
Another interesting fact you may mind useful:
• SCAS receives 500,000 ‘999’ calls every year
HIOWAA’s future - HIOWAA’s plan for the future is to ensure we are able to fund extended 24hour service and enhanced Medical Cover
4,000th Mission - On Thursday 4th Oct, HIOWAA flew our 4000th Mission since we started flying in 2007. This coincides with the introduction of the latest enhancement to our service, with Doctor-led crews on each shift. Â Dr Nick Maskery was on board, with paramedic Tim Ross, and pilot Dave Bronniman, to attend a patient on the Isle of Wight who was conveyed to Southampton General Hospital. This also involved another of our enhancements to the service, night landings on lit helipads.Â
Greetings Cards - You can now support HIOWAA when sending greeting cards to your family and friends. Simply go to our website home page click on the card tab which will take you to our greeting cards page. Choose the card you wish to send, write your message then complete the address details and it will be sent out the next day 1st class post if ordered by 2pm. The cost is £2.99,  with £1 of this donated to HIOWAA, + 60p 1st class postage. If sending to an international address the appropriate postage will be shown. Please note your recipient will receive an actual card (not an e-card) and if you wish, the card can be sent to your home address with an additional envelope for forwarding
We will be discussing all of this further at the meetings on 20th Oct (Isle of Wight) and 8th December (Winchester), but should you have any queries – please let me know and I will do my best to answer them!
I’m really looking forward to seeing you at one of the meetings. Please remember to let me know if you are able to attend.
For anyone interested – 70 days until Christmas!
