Having been lucky enough to run the London Marathon for the past two years, I thought I would add a new angle to my running this year.  I was able to secure a place for the third year running through my club, City of Portsmouth A C so decided to have a go at “back to back†marathons – two marathons over two weekends, Brighton Marathon followed by London to help raise money for HIOWAA.
Despite being on antibiotics for a chest infection, my Doctor signed me as fit to run on Friday 12th April, (with a promise not to race!) so, on a chilly Sunday 14th April I lined up with 10,000 other runners  at the start line of the Brighton Marathon.  All went well with the sun showing itself and impressive crowds turning out to cheer us along as I finished in a comfortable 4 hours 6 minutes.  Well outside my best time, but completed.  Six days now to recover and prepare for London on 21st April…
After events in Boston, London Marathon was an even more emotional occasion than usual with larger than ever crowds cheering runners on and proving that the “British Bulldog Sprit†is alive and well and will not be affected by cowardly acts of terrorism.  All runners marked recent sad events with 30 seconds of reflection before the run and many runners donning a black ribbon as a mark of respect.
I had 36,000 people to keep me company on this 26.2 mile jog around our capital a fact that ensures this is a race to enjoy rather than to go for a time.  It took me a disappointing 4 hours 12 minutes to get around the course – the impact of my previous weeks exploits putting extra minutes into my legs.  The amazing crowd (rumoured to be in excess of 700,000) carried me for the last five miles, they cheered every runner, every step of the way until crossing the finish line in The Mall.  Thank you.
I now have four weeks to recover before I fly up to Edinburgh to run their Marathon – a race I fully intend to give my all to.  Would I do a “double†again?  Ermm, at the age of 46 and suffering from asthma, no, I don’t think so, it hurts – a lot…!
Thank you to everyone who was/is kind enough to sponsor me. www.virginmoneygiving.com/charonbaggaley
