After spending two days in the John O’Groats area resting, our intrepid 68 year old round Britain motor cyclist, Les Spicer, set out yesterday (Thursday) along the long and desolate coast of northern Scotland.
Although up until now the 43 year old motorcycle had performed fine, alas all was not well and as Les explained, the 1968 Triumph Tiger was losing power, so much so that on some hills Les was in first gear and barely crawling up them.  As Les said, this is the ‘fun’ of attempting this journey on a 1968 machine. Eventually Les came to a halt just outside the town of Garloch, fortuitously very near to the only privately owned whiskey distillery in the UK, the Loch Ewe Whisky Distillery at Aultbea http://www.lochewedistillery.co.uk/
After a series of telephone calls, today the motorcycle is being recovered back along the coast to Glenn Rothes where Les had the brakes overhauled earlier in the week.   Alas Les fears the engine will need to be stripped down and the lack of engine compression investigated. This could take a little while as specialist replacement parts may be needed.  Les has acquired lodging at the distillery and although disappointed that the journey is not proceeding as planned is in very good spirits (no pun intended!)   Les has promised to report back further when more is known, and we will update readers with the latest news from Les’s journey.
