Discussions with the Scottish Government on pensions and retirement age are continuing this week, the Fire Brigades Union has confirmed.
The union received proposals from Scotland’s Minister for Community Safety and Legal Affairs, Roseanna Cunningham, on Thursday 29 August, and in another letter from the Scottish Government and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service on Wednesday 4 September. However, the union’s Executive Council said they needed more detail on the proposals than was contained in the letters to meaningfully consult members.
Union officials met the Scottish Government on Friday 13 September to discuss more detail, and are expecting soon to receive a letter with enough detail to give members a clear, accurate picture of the proposals.
Although union officials are working hard to reach an agreement with the Scottish government, concerns remain over various aspects of the proposals. Firefighters in Scotland will not strike while negotiations are continuing, but if no settlement can be found, the union’s strike ballot could still result in industrial action.
