The Fire Brigades Union is encouraging all members to apply to buy back pension contributions from strike days as soon as possible.
Members have reported that some fire and rescue services have said that firefighters cannot buy back contributions until the ongoing trade dispute over pensions has been resolved.
However, the rules of both 1992 and 2006 firefighters pension schemes state that firefighters can buy back their lost service within six months of having returned to duty following periods of absence.
As the first strike over pensions took place on Wednesday 25 September, FBU members have just a week to apply for repayment for that date.
The FBU has produced a template letter for members to make an application. You can find it here.
You can also read more on buying back contributions in a members’ circular here.
