So today sees the last edition of the News Of The World! Time to say farewell. The crisis resulting from the phone hacking scandal has finally forced Murdoch to carry out a damage limitation exercise. He is presumably hoping that this move will demonstrate his organisation is serious about tackling the root of the problem. Instead it looks like it is just going to get bigger and bigger. This is a story involving some of the country’s top politicians (including the prime minister); allegations of police corruption; an obvious failure to adequately investigate serious issues – and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. For just one latest aspect of this see here.
So a major national publication has been brought down – as a result of persistent investigative journalism and later a campaign involving new media – twitter and so on which led major advertisers to start pulling the rug on the NoW.
It is not good to see any loss of jobs and I am sure there are some decent people who work at the NoW. But the paper itself was a nasty anti-union, anti working class rag. Firefighters will never forget the dirt thrown at us during the pay dispute in 2002 or in local disputes since. Even their last edition cannot resist having a go at public sector worker pensions. Nothing new there then.
My final message to them – goodbye – don’t come back.
