DISTANCE and speed are the two key issues that firefighters and
staff will focus on when they take part in a national road safety
Crews and community safety staff are involved in events and
activities around the county that should get people thinking more
carefully about keeping their speed down and driving at the right
The Chief Fire Officers Association National Road Safety
Day takes place on Friday, July 6.
Councillor David Acton, Chairman of Greater Manchester Fire and
Rescue Authority, said: "Firefighters and community safety staff
hope to make a real impact on people right across Greater
Manchester on Friday.
"Our crews go out and rescue people from collisions every day -
which has a massive effect on the victims, their families and the
firefighters themselves - so it's very important that we try and
help people to be more careful when they're out on the roads.
"The message from National Road Safety day is simple: keep your
distance and watch your speed."
Manchester crews and staff will be taking over Albert Square for
the second time in a month to make an impact on shoppers and
workers in the city centre and will be joined by Greater Manchester
Police and a number of other agencies.
Community safety advisors and volunteers will be targeting
shoppers with a stand at the Trafford Centre.
Community safety staff and volunteers will be at Asda stores in
Rochdale and Pilsworth to talk to people driving to do their
shopping and Bury staff will be doing the same at Tesco in the
Wigan crews and staff will be on Market Place in the town centre
demonstrating what it is like to have to cut a victim of a road
traffic collision from a car.
Bolton crews and staff will be working with police and ambulance
colleagues to give the same hard-hitting message to visitors to the
Blackrod Scarecrow Festival and showing how all three emergency
services work together at the scene of a collision.
GMFRS staff and firefighters will be at the events detailed
between 10am and 4pm on Friday, July 6 - except for the Wigan event
takes place on Saturday, July 7, Bolton event which takes place on
Sunday, July 8.
