Nine youngsters from Gateshead have completed a four-day Phoenix course run by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, in partnership with Gateshead Council.
The Phoenix programme is aimed at young people aged between 12 and 17 years. The main aim of the programme is to change attitudes and behaviour, instil confidence and self-esteem, discipline and self-discipline, team working and social skills.
The group of nine boys aged between 12 and 17 completed the course, which culminated in them presenting a fire drill display in front of their families at Birtley Community Fire Station on Thursday, 23 February.
The group was also awarded individual course certificates in basic life support, risk assessment and work experience by the Deputy Mayor of Gateshead, Cllr Pauline Dillon.
Area Manager Alan Robson, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: "I am really pleased that Gateshead Council decided to reinstate the Phoenix programme.
"As well as educating young people about the dangers of fire, fire setting and hoax calls, the activities have a range of other benefits. They can help build self-confidence, general safety awareness and social responsibility, all of which help the community to be safe."
Tyne and Wear Fire Authority Member, Cllr Kevin Dodds, said: "This has been a really positive experience for all of the young people involved and they have all grown in confidence as a result.
"The Phoenix programme is an excellent partnership and the young people who completed the course should be very proud of themselves. I hope the lessons they have learned stand them in good stead for the future."
Cllr Linda Green, Gateshead Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Volunteering, said: “This was an excellent opportunity for these young people to engage with the fire and rescue service, giving them the skills and opportunities that they may not otherwise have had.â€
