Staff at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service have joined in the latest social media craze that is sweeping the world.
The 22 Push-up Challenge is an American initiative which began after figures revealed that 22 former servicemen and women in the US take their own lives each day. To raise awareness of PTSD, people have been challenged to do 22 push-ups every day for 22 days.
In support of this initiative and alongside the Mind Blue Light Programme which also supports and challenges the stigma of mental health, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is delivering safety messages to ensure that our communities have a safe and enjoyable summer.
By using this concept it will also deliver a different summer safety message related to water safety; road safety; camping, BBQs and drinking alcohol by a different individual or group over 22 days.
The campaign will run from Friday, 12 August to Friday, 2 September.
Group Manager Dave Jefferson, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “As a service we are committed to reducing the stigma around mental health and improving well-being, especially for people working or volunteering in the emergency services.
“It's great that so many of our staff are taking on the push-up challenge to raise awareness of these issues in a fun way.â€
Look out for the swiftwater rescue teams and Young Firefighters Association members taking part in the coming days. The finale will see Blue Watch at Marley Park Community Fire Station in Sunderland doing push-ups and testing smoke alarms.
