Following the success of the first two Ignite programmes for young people, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service is running another course starting on 26 September 2016.
Ignite, which is funded by Sunderland College, gives young people aged 16 to 18 the opportunity to try out new skills, get a taste of the workplace and plan for their future. School sixth form or college may not be in the plans for some young people, so Ignite offers a great alternative education programme.
The full-time course runs four days a week until June 2017 at Gosforth Community Fire Station. Students who complete the programme receive a nationally recognised qualification - the City and Guilds Diploma in Employability Skills.
It offers community-based projects throughout the year, opening up insights into different careers, and includes work placements so learners can find out more about an industry they have an interest in. Students also learn about CV building, searching for and applying for jobs, letter writing and interview skills.
They can also experience new things such as kayaking, abseiling, climbing and other outdoor pursuits at activity days and a team building residential.
All student travel costs are refunded and bursaries are available from Sunderland College.
Ignite course leader Stewart Lamb, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Our first two courses were highly successful and we envisage that our third Ignite course will be even better, with great interest being shown already.
"We have a good network of partner organisations who we work with to offer progression routes to students when they are due to complete the programme."
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Authority Chairman, Cllr Tom Wright, said: "The Ignite courses have been very successful and demonstrate our commitment to improving the lives of young people in our local communities."
