A teenager has suffered serious burns after being attacked on her doorstep by a man who doused her in what’s believed to be a high-strength cleaning fluid.
The 19-year-old, from MacDonald Close in Tividale, answered a knock at the door at around 3pm on Tuesday (April 15) when the caller assaulted her with the caustic liquid.
She suffered 15 per cent burns to the side of her face and neck and is currently being treated in hospital; doctors are also assessing whether she may have suffered internal injuries to her throat and lungs.
Police investigators have carried out local enquiries and CCTV analysis shows the attacker running from the scene along with three other men.
Detectives have plotted their path from MacDonald Close, into Addington Way, Portland Drive and along a footpath connecting Shelbourne Close and Palmerston Drive which leads onto Temple Way.
Investigating officer Detective Inspector Jim Munro is keen to hear from anyone with information about the attack or who saw the group – believed to be white men in their late teens or early 20s – in the estate before or after the incident.
He said: “We believe this was a targeted attack; he knocked on the door and when she answered threw the liquid. It’s not clear what the substance is yet but initial thoughts are that it’s some kind of high-strength detergent.
“An investigation is underway to try and establish a motive for the attack and to trace the attacker and the other men he’s seen leaving the scene with.”
A man in his 60s who answered the door with the teenager suffered minor burn injuries.
Anyone with information is urged to call Det Insp Jim Munro at West Midlands Police Force CID in Harborne on the 101 number, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 08000 555 111.
