AÂ Birmingham robber has been jailed after holding up a city newsagents at gunpoint.
Darren Ogom was arrested following a public appeal for information by detectives hunting a gunman who robbed the News Plus store in West Heath, back in January 2013.
The 37-year-old calmly walked into the store, on Grange Farm Road, on 16 January last year and produced a pistol, which he brandished at the shop’s owner before demanding cash from the till.
Just days after police released CCTV footage of the raid, Ogom was arrested from his home on Longdales Road, Kings Norton.
Ogom, who was unemployed, was later charged with robbery and possession of an imitation firearm. He pleaded guilty and appeared before Worcester Crown Court on 9 May where he was sentenced to a jail term of four years ten months, with a further two year sentence for the firearms offence, to run concurrently.
DC Darren Wilkie from the force’s Criminal Investigation Department, investigated the robbery. Following the sentencing, he said: “This was a serious crime which left the shop owner distressed – and all for just a few pounds.
“In total Ogom managed to grab just a few ten pound notes from the till, but as a result of his actions he is now facing several years in jail.
“The length of his sentence reflects the severity of the crime, particularly due to the use of a weapon which caused his victim to fear for his safety.
“We’d like to thank those who assisted with our appeal last year in helping us to trace Ogom and ultimately bring him to justice.”
