We can confirm that the North East Counter Terrorism Unit has assumed responsibility for the investigation of the incident at Newcastle University Campus on Haymarket Lane.
The Unit will be working alongside Northumbria Police as the investigation progresses.
Precautionary evacuations took place at the campus on Tuesday June 10 and Thursday June 12, 2014, while specialist teams removed suspicious material from the premises. Searches have now concluded and students have since been allowed to return to their accommodation.
Due to the potential offences under investigation, the North East CTU will lead the inquiry at this time. There is no evidence to suggest that students, or any wider communities are at immediate risk in connection with the alleged offences under investigation.
Two 18 year old men have been arrested and remain in custody at this time. The first 18 year old was arrested in London on Tuesday June 10 on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act. The second 18 year old was arrested in Northumbria on Wednesday June 11 on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act. Officers have been granted extensions to give them more time to question the men.
We recognise that people may have concerns as a result of this activity and would like to reassure them that precautions were taken at the earliest opportunity to ensure public safety while enquiries were undertaken.
We would ask people not to be alarmed and we are grateful for the patience and understanding of people locally.
