A woman who was seriously injured in an incident on a canal towpath in Leeds has died in hospital.
Police were called to the towpath off Canal Road, Armley, at 4.29pm yesterday following reports of a woman having been assaulted.
The 38-year-old was found with serious head injuries and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary but was pronounced dead a short time later.
A 53-year-old man was arrested at the scene.
Detective Chief Inspector Jim Dunkerley, of West Yorkshire Police Protective Services (Crime), said: “We are treating the woman’s death as murder and the suspect remains in custody at this time. A forensic post mortem is due to be carried out today.
“We have spoken to a number of members of the public who witnessed the incident and gave first aid to the injured woman but we would still like to hear from any other witnesses or anyone with any information that could assist the investigation.”
