A teacher who groomed and sexually abused a pupil in his care has been jailed for 12 years.Andrew Adams, 04.11.44 (68 yrs), a retired teacher of Solna Road, N21 pleaded guilty to buggery against one male victim, under the age of 16, at Wood Green Crown Court on 13 March. He pleaded guilty to indecent assault charges against the same victim on 17 June, also at Wood Green Crown Court. He was sentenced at the same venue on 18 July.The abuse took place over a number of years in the early 1980s when Adams was employed as a PE teacher at Highgate Wood School in north London. His victim, who was having personal problems at the time, confided in Adams. However, Adams took advantage of the boy’s vulnerability and, over a period of time, groomed and manipulated him into have a sexual relationship. The boy was aged around 13 at the time the abuse began, while Adams was aged in his 30s.Adams was arrested in August 2012 and charged in November 2013 following an investigation by officers from the Met’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command.DC Samantha Andreas, who led the investigation, said:“Andrew Adams abused his position of trust to take advantage of a vulnerable boy who had confided in him.“Adams’ abuse had a devastating impact on his victim who struggled to cope with the consequences; while he was in turmoil Adams continued to pursue his career.“I would like to praise the courage of the victim who, despite the passage of time, had the confidence to come forward and report the abuse to police. Our specially trained officers have supported the victim throughout this process and I hope today’s sentencing gives him some form of closure.”Police are also appealing for any other pupils who may have been abused by Andrew Adams to come forward and speak to them.
