A 40-year-old man has today (Wednesday 3 September 2014) been jailed for six years for arson and fraud following a four week trial last month.
Justin Hindry, of Manor Farm Close, Drayton, was found guilty at Norwich Crown Court of charges relating to arson and fraud by false representation following an incident at Aylsham Bathroom and Kitchen Centre on Wednesday 27 June 2012. He received a six year jail sentence for each offence to run concurrently.
The business on Burgh Road was completely destroyed by the fire, with the blaze causing substantial damage not only to the premises but also to neighbouring properties. The building itself was damaged to such an extent that it was too dangerous to enter for some days.
The premise was owned by Hindry and had been alarmed. At the time of the fire there were only a small number of key holders who knew the code to deactivate the alarm to the business, which according to experts appeared to have no fault. Hindry was seen by witnesses at the site after the alarm was set and deactivated and prior to it being reset once the fire had started. Mobile phone cell site data showed he was not in Reepham as he claimed in interview but in fact still in Aylsham at the time of the incident.
Fraud investigators discovered Hindry’s income from the business did not support his outgoings. His business was struggling with creditors chasing for payment. It was also revealed that Hindry was an active gambler, losing £50,000 in two years in one casino alone.
Detective Sergeant Darren Reade, from Great Yarmouth CID, who led the investigation into the offences, welcomed the sentencing saying: “Justin Hindry thought to con emergency services, detectives and his insurance company by setting fire to his struggling business to make money out of the claim. He also deceived his own staff, many of whom had supported him throughout the investigation. His complete disregard for the law and the danger it placed others in is shocking and his conviction will serve as a warning to others who are considering making money in this way.â€
