Following a fast-moving and pro-active internal investigation, a serving Hertfordshire police officer has been charged today (Friday December 12) with misconduct in public office, rape, the making and possession of indecent images of a child and the making and possession of a film featuring indecent images.
PC Leigh Brightman, 36, who lives in North Herts was arrested in August and was suspended pending the outcome of the criminal investigation. He has been bailed to appear at Luton Magistrates Court on January 5, 2015.
Given the gravity of the allegations, considerable specialist resources have been deployed to investigate the matter which has resulted in charges being brought. The IPCC has also been informed and there has been liaison throughout.
During his service PC Brightman has been based at Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Rickmansworth and Hitchin.
The investigation continues and anyone with information is asked to contact Hertfordshire Constabulary in confidence on 01707 35 4884.
