Police in Knaresborough have issued a warning and appeal for information after two bogus callers conned their way into an 82-year-old woman’s home and stole money from her.
The incident happened on Mayfield Grove between 1pm and 1.15pm on Monday 15 December 2014, when two men claimed to be from the water board and tricked their way into the woman’s house.
One man distracted the elderly victim, claiming he was checking water supplies after carrying out a repair nearby, as he did this, the second man sneaked upstairs.
The men then left the property and the woman later discovered that an amount of cash had been taken from an upstairs room.
Police are asking for any witnesses to the incident to contact them and are advising residents not to let anyone into their home who they are not expecting or they don’t know.
If someone calls at your door who you do not know, don’t open the door but ask them to post their name and organisation’s details through the letter box and then check their credentials with the company they claim to be from.
Do not use the numbers they give you, but look them up in the phone book or online. A genuine caller will be more than happy to wait while you do this.
To check on anyone claiming to be a water official, please call Yorkshire Water’s “check identity†phone line on 0345 1 24 24 24.
Investigating officer, PC Quita Passmore of Harrogate Priority Crime Team, said: “Bogus callers are cowardly and devious and their crimes can have a lasting affect on their victims.
“They deliberately target older and vulnerable people taking advantage of their trusting nature. I urge members of the public to reassure their elderly relatives, friends and neighbours that it is not rude to keep someone waiting outside while you check their details. If they are in any doubt, do not, under any circumstances open their door.â€
Anyone with any information is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2 and ask for Harrogate CID or email [email protected]
