We were introduced to Crimestoppers during the early stages of development of the programme, and their support has been invaluable to us. When we launched the Billy’s Wish Anti Knife Crime Education Programme to Dacorum’s Head Teachers a representative from Crimestoppers attended and spoke to the audience, offering their support and expertise in the fight against knives.
Our Education Programme comprises of a series of three short films aimed at school children aged 10-14. The workshops are designed to get children talking, firstly to identify a ‘safe adult’ (primary school, year 6), and on to the consequences and hard facts of carrying a knife and knife crime in secondary schools. Each film introduces Fearless, the arm of Crimestoppers that is particularly designed for young people. The three workshops also discuss how young people can use the Fearless website to report crime anonymously.
We have built up a very strong relationship with the Hertfordshire Fearless team, and work with them to deliver a strong message during school assemblies. To be able to offer children a completely safe and anonymous way to report a crime, and particularly someone carrying a knife, really completes our ‘package’. One of the schools we are working with is in the process of adding the Fearless icon on their pupils’ computers’ front page so their children don’t even need to remember the website address!
We promote Fearless in all our literature and on the merchandise that we hand out at our workshops, including their website address so that young people can access information close to hand when they need it. I believe that there is no better or safer way for a child to report a suspected crime with the absolute confidence that they will never be traced. The Fearless website is perfectly pitched at children and teenagers, and is an excellent tool to be able to offer.
As Fearless is part of the Crimestoppers organisation, working very closely with them gives our charity credibility to schools and organisations that don’t know about our work. We are very grateful for their support and endorsement!
