For the past nine years we’ve teamed up with the Serious and Organised Crime Agency and, more recently, the National Crime Agency (NCA) to track down British fugitives hiding in Spain, as part of Operation Captura. And it’s proved a huge success – to date we’ve helped to capture 68 out of 86 wanted individuals.
But it doesn’t mean we’ve given up on the 18 who are currently still on the run and wanted for crimes including rape, murder and drugs trafficking.
This week we broadcast mug shots of all the remaining fugitives on a digital screen and sent it out on a tour around popular British ex-pat areas in Spain.
Dubbed the ‘Rogues Roadshow’ by the media, it’s the first time we’ve done anything like this as part of Operation Captura.
But we felt that going in to the fugitives’ ‘back yards’ and putting their faces in plain sight might help to flush them out of hiding.
We invited David Allen, Head of the UK International Crime Bureau at the NCA, to explain more about Operation Captura and how we won’t stop until all the fugitives are found…“We run Operation Captura in conjunction with Crimestoppers and the Spanish authorities – including the Guardia Civil and the Spanish National Police.
“Our aim is to try to find and arrest British fugitives who are on the run in Spain – these individuals have committed some of the most serious crimes in the UK.
“The UK can’t afford to be soft on fugitives and we have to keep looking for them to make sure they are found and brought back to face justice.
“It doesn’t matter how long it takes – some individuals have been on the list for 13 or more years but they have committed serious offences and we don’t won’t give up until they are found.
“The public is absolutely vital to our operations – they are extra eyes and ears on the ground.
“We would urge anyone who has seen any of the wanted individuals to get in contact.
“You can do this anonymously through Crimestoppers’ 0800 555 111 number in the UK and 900 555 111 in Spain. You can also give information anonymously online.
“If you see any of these individuals, if you have any information whatsoever please let us know.
“Some of these individuals have fled hoping that we’ll forget about them, that they’ll escape justice in the UK.
“And some do hide for a number of years –but we do find them at the end of the day, and we will bring them back.
“What I would say is that if you are one of the remaining faces on there, one of the targets who we’re looking for – give yourself up. Save yourself the grief of Spanish forces or other police coming through your door at 5 or 6 in the morning.
“We will find you, we will bring you back to the UK and you will face justice.â€
