Taseen Khanam is in the third year of her Criminology degree. She currently has a placement with Crimestoppers and has been working with us on a voluntary basis.
Taseen has learnt new skills by volunteering with us
I was offered the option to complete a placement year to get some practical work experience and I was really excited when Crimestoppers was offered as an option.
I’ve been with the charity for five months now, working in the central office, and it has absolutely been the best experience I could have gained.
I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to different teams – from Campaigns to Communications, Digital, Fundraising and Crimestoppers’ youth team, Fearless – and I’ve worked on lots of different projects.
Raising awareness
I’ve created posters to raise awareness of issues including burglary and online scamming. I’ve also written blogs for Crimestoppers about hate crime and gun crime, both will be uploaded here soon so watch this space!
During my time here I’ve also done some research on crimes, specifically child sexual exploitation (CSE) for the Fearless team. I gathered information about who is most vulnerable and what signs to look out for.
I am now in my final two weeks of my placement and I’ve now got an opportunity to reflect on what opportunities and prospects Crimestoppers has opened up for me.
I now have a really good understanding of how a charity works and what it’s like to be part of a working environment.
I have been faced with real-life issues that have required analytical and evaluative skills and I now have a new understanding of crime.
New skills and experiences
Working at with the charity has also given me the opportunity to enhance my CV with new skills and experiences.
Most importantly, the Crimestoppers team and the environment have always been warm and inviting – this made my volunteering at Crimestoppers extremely enjoyable.
My time here has really been worth worthwhile and one that I would definitely recommend to fellow students or anyone really looking for experience in the wider criminal justice community.
