Metropolitan Police cars were just like this when I joined up. No fancy markings. You had to be sharp to spot us coming. We didn't want to shout about being out there. We just reported and arrested naughty people.
This force won an award for this design. No consultancy was paid to come up with it, the transport manager sorted it out. It was a traffic car - it was supposed to be visible.
They `surveyed` 800 people about the new proposed design - introduced years ago elsewhere! Presumably the other nine odd million were out busy voting for the Police and Community Commissioners (no, wait, I don't think London needs one as they have Boris:)
But now someone at the Met think that this will "help keep Londoners safe" ???
Meanwhile, in New York City, the NYPD announced that no violent crime was reported for the first time in its history. But we mustn't get excited about statistics and glitches or `glitchtistics`. The fine detailed among us will realise that the key word in this was `reported `.
A more significant but lesser known statistic points to the year 1968 - the only year in living memory when no serving British soldier was killed, anywhere in the world. Its just a statistic, in the same way as the highest per capita gun possessing country in the world has the lowest rate of gun crime - Switzerland. Its all smoke, mirrors and Alpine air.
And we are eagerly expectantly awaiting the Levenson Report today. That will protect us from nasty journalists and the naughty people who are in their pockets, won't it? No longer will unsuspecting folks be wire-tapped, text-bugged, voicemail-mugged or damned by cruel untruths - but, celebrities, be on your guard for the cleverly worded questions such as,. "So, Minister, what is the largest dick you've ever held?" Reply (smugly), "Why my own, of course" . Headlines read, "Minister holds many dicks - all smaller than his own".
