I would like to wish 42 Commando the best of luck with their six-month deployment in Afghanistan, which officially started today. The Marines are part of 3 Commando Brigade and will be ‘in country’ until October.
Welcome back to the 3 Para contingent after a mother of a tour!
Here at Ruralshire Constabulary we used to take a fair number of ex-servicemen into the job.
This ended when the ‘powers that be’ unleashed the disaster formerly known as the Enhanced Learning Package. I never bothered to get to grips with this mad plan because despite many promises to the contrary, perhaps because of them, I always knew it would be another two-minute-wonder.
The ELP had an emperors new clothes feel about it from the beginning. Something about replacing the traditional National Police Training College system with a mixture of Higher Education College based nonsense, some ‘e-learning’ packages and a small amount of diversity rubbish before being thrown head first into a patrol team, being immediately snatched for prisoner handling teams and then emerging after two years never having really learned anything of consequence.
Eventually (and predictably) after accusing anyone who challenged this nonsense of being ‘resistant to change’, ACPO themselves saw the ludicrousness of this folly and sacked the whole idea, but not before blowing loads of tax-payers money and driving off all the mature candidates, who immediately rushed off to forces not engaged in this nonsense to start the proper business of being a real police probationer.
Meanwhile, I am struggling to find anything I have ever cared less about in my whole life than the wretched forthcoming Royal wedding. I fully expect the Met to be blamed for being too hard/ too soft after some riotous bunch of public school hoorays rush about and occupy a chocolate shop, or whatever it is they do.
Gadget Note: Before any regional journalists become moist over identifying me by how Ruralshire organised our training system, I know of at least 20 forces who adopted this silly nonsense over a four-year period. Stick of rock anyone? Doh!
