PC dies in hospital after being knocked unconscious following off-duty row outside a nightclub.
A West Midlands officer has died in hospital two weeks after being knocked unconscious during an early-morning row.
The 33-year-old PC, who has not yet been named, was walking past Divine Bar in Wolverhampton during a night out when he became embroiled in a row with a black man and two white women who had just left the club at 4.30am on January 28.
A scuffle broke out and the off-duty officer was punched and left unconscious in the road with a serious head injury. He was taken to hospital but died last night (February 7).
A post mortem examination will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death.
In appealing for witnesses Det Insp Phil Asquith said what people may have written off as low-level disorder was a serious assault which has now resulted in a man’s death.
Officers investigating the incident say there is nothing to suggest he was assaulted because he was a police officer.
An 18-year-old man and two women have been arrested by police and bailed until a date next month pending further enquiries.
