In 2009 Surrey Police interviewed Jimmy Savile under caution. The transcript of that interview has been released this week following a request under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
This was an unusual request which was initially rejected due to an active Surrey Police investigation. However, following a formal review a redacted version has been released. This decision was made following extensive consultation which included speaking to the victims and the FOI Central Referral Unit.
It is crucial to the criminal justice process that victims have the confidence to come forward and this is not jeopardised by the publication of interview material. Therefore, anything which could identify the victims has been removed. Any material which could impact on on-going police enquiries has also been removed and this process took some time to complete.
Surrey Police informed the victims involved personally prior to the release of the transcript to offer appropriate support services.
The interview was conducted in line with all the information known at the time. Surrey Police had conducted intelligence checks which found no other police force in the country had a record of previous allegations against Savile.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) was consulted on a number of occasions prior to the interview and they advised no further action would be taken in this case. Officers took the decision to proceed with an interview of Savile under caution. As an out-of-custody interview it was not required to take place in a police station.
Following the interview and in view of the advice from the CPS, the investigation was concluded.
Surrey Police published a full report into its investigation in January this year to be open about what actions were taken.
This report can be found here.
The report highlights that the interview was in line with the direction given by the Senior Crown Prosecutor. However, it also identified that it could have been more probing. (see page 34, section 8.14).
