The Chief Constable of Cumbria Constabulary is to join Commissioner Bernard Hogan-Howe at the head of the senior team at the Metropolitan Police.
Home Secretary Theresa May confirmed that Craig Mackey (pictured) would be the new Deputy Commissioner – replacing Tim Godwin who retired in November.
The announcement came after a final set of interviews for the post conducted by Mrs May, Commissioner Hogan-Howe and London Mayor Boris Johnson.
An officer who is popular with all ranks, CC Mackey has served nearly three decades with the Police Service and most recently won huge respect for his leadership during and after the tragic shootings that left 12 people dead.
The Chief has also served as the Lead of the Race Equality Portfolio for ACPO.
Mrs May said CC Mackey would bring huge experience as the Met geared up for a coming year that will see the Olympics and Queen’s Diamond Jubilee
She added: “It has been a period of big change for the Metropolitan Police. But this decision completes a strong team at the head of the country’s biggest force.”
In echoing the sentiments, Mr Johnson added: “Craig Mackey has a strong track record in public order and will bring a new dynamism to the role of Deputy Commissioner.
“We have an exciting year ahead, with major operations tackling gangs and serious youth violence, plus the challenge of policing the Olympic Games.
“Craig Mackey will prove an asset in driving the Met from strength-to-strength.”
Commissioner Hogan-Howe emphasised: “I am looking forward to working with Craig. He has a strong record as Chief Constable in Cumbria during testing times.
“His experience as the ACPO Lead on the Race Equality Portfolio, which includes stop and search and the monitoring of police powers, means he has experience across the board.”
