Members of the Police Firearms Officers Association are stepping up a gear in their fundraising efforts by cycling from John O’Groats to Lands End.
The 10 officers from across eight forces – backed up by a two-strong support crew – are currently in training for their marathon voyage south before leaving on April 28.
In an interview with PoliceOracle.com, association chairman PC Mark Williams said the endeavour would be physically punishing – but he was looking forward to the challenge.
PC Williams, who is an ex-soldier with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards and currently serving with the Met, said it would also be an opportunity to raise the profile of firearms officers in addition to collecting funds for the association.
He added: “Cycling from one end of the UK to the other seemed a really good way of doing this. We will be stopping at supermarket areas and handing out leaflets.
“We will be speaking to people, educating them about what firearms officers do and why we need them.â€
PC Williams said the PFOA has grown significantly over the past 12 months – currently standing at 3,500 members – and the group is now set to expand further.
As well as increasing the membership, the officer said more trained counsellors are now being employed to look after firearms personnel and their families in need.
