Theresa May read from a pre-written script rather than listen to frustrations of members, says staff association chair.
The Home Secretary’s sour reception at the Police Federation’s annual conference reflected “the real frustration†felt by rank and file members, it has been claimed.
Staff association Chairman Paul McKeever told PoliceOracle.com some members were facing “real hardship†– and this was reflected in the atmosphere that greeted Theresa May at the event in Bournemouth from May 14-16
“Clearly Sir Hugh is entitled to say exactly how he sees it, but I would say that there are some officers who are now facing real hardship.â€
Mr McKeever was speaking after ACPO President Sir Hugh Orde lambasted a minority of Fed representatives for their “unjustified and discourteous†conduct.
As reported by PoliceOracle.com, the Home Secretary was greeted with a wall of silence after making her speech in Bournemouth before being heckled and facing calls for her resignation.
In an address at his organisation’s Leading Change in Policing event in Manchester, Sir Hugh said the minority had deflected attention from key issues.
But while acknowledging that the ACPO president was entitled to his opinion, Mr McKeever said there was a feeling that the government was still not listening to concerns on issues such as cuts and proposed changes to pay and pensions.
He emphasised: “Clearly Sir Hugh is entitled to say exactly how he sees it, but I would say that there are some officers who are now facing real hardship.
“The Home Secretary came to the conference with a prepared text and read it out rather than listening clearly to the frustrations of our very vocal membership.â€
Mr McKeever was a guest on a question time session at the ACPO summer policing conference – held in Manchester – where he joined a panel with colleagues including Ch Supt Derek Barnett, President of the Superintendents’ Association.
Earlier the session heard from Keith Vaz, Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, who said he had never seen officers so angry in 25 years as an MP.
